L'any 1867, amb la Revolució Industrial ben engegada, l'enginyer Ildefons Cerdà, autor del Pla de Reforma i Ampliació de Barcelona, va publicar la seva Teoria General de la Urbanització. Va ser el primer llibre de la història en què el procés de disseny i construcció de ciutats es va analitzar i definir sistemàticament com a ciència. En ella, Cerdà va encunyar el terme urbanització, definit com "el conjunt o principis, doctrines i normes que s'han d'aplicar perquè els edificis i els seus conglomerats, en contraposició a restringir, distorsionar i corrompre les facultats físiques, morals i intel·lectuals dels humans socials, pot ajudar a promoure el seu desenvolupament i vitalitat millorant així el benestar individual, la suma total del qual constitueix la prosperitat pública. Avui, en plena revolució digital, en un moment en què les urbanitzacions del planeta estan en plena ebullició i ens trobem davant de nous reptes col·lectius, presentem la primera traducció completa a l'anglès de la Teoria i publiquem les seves anàlisis estadístiques en gràfics i mapes interactius a la plataforma de dades obertes urbanization.org.

In 1867, with the Industrial Revolution well underway, the engineer Ildefons Cerdà, author of the Barcelona Reform and Expansion Plan, published his General Theory of Urbanization. It was the first book in history in which the process of designing and building cities was systematically analyzed and defined as a science. In it, Cerdà coined the term urbanization, defined as "the set or principles, doctrines and rules that must be applied so that buildings and their conglomerates, as opposed to restricting, distorting and corrupting the physical, moral and intellectuals of social humans, can help promote their development and vitality thus improving individual well-being, the sum total of which constitutes public prosperity. Today, in the midst of the digital revolution, at a time when the urbanizations of the planet are in in full swing and facing new collective challenges, we present the first full English translation of the Theory and publish its statistical analyzes in graphs and interactive maps on the open data platform urbanization.org.
